The Science Museum feels like several museums in one. I didn’t budget enough time for it, you definitely can spend over two hours there.

The most popular exhibits are the steam engines, rockets and aeroplanes on the ground floor but don’t forget to venture upstairs to the Wellcome Galleries and Clockmakers’ Museum. They’re also fantastic and slightly less hectic at peak times.

Hunterian Museum

Located in Holborn

The Wellcome Gallery in the Science Museum includes a toe-curling display about the early days of surgery, and John Hunter - a famous 18th century surgical pioneer - is mentioned.

The Hunterian Museum expands on the display in the Science Museum with even more grimly detailed medical history and exhibits.

The main thing to see though is John Hunter’s extraordinary collection of medical specimens in jars, dating back to the 1700s and showing the progression of diseases such as Tuberculosis.
