I was honestly pretty shocked at how miserable visiting the British Museum is. Yes, the place is enormous but it is always, and I mean always, crammed with people to such an extent that it ends up feeling like Oxford Circus tube station with statues. Seeing anything is very difficult while learning anything is almost impossible.

Think you’ll be okay visiting in the winter? No, the queue stretched round the entire building when I tried. Think it’ll be quieter when the sun is out? No, you’ll be gently cooked inside.

It is a real shame because the breadth of exhibits is of course incredible. even if there’s of course a lot of grim history and continuing controversy about how they got there.

If you do visit during the day I’d book an exhibition and get a timed ticket, it’ll reduce the time spent in queues. Oh, and have lunch first, the sandwich & drink deal is £13, crikey.
