Southwark Park Galleries

Photo by me, easily the worst photo on the site.

A charity-run modern art gallery across two buildings in Southwark Park.

The Dilston Gallery is located on the southern edge of the park in a deconsecrated church that closed in the 1950s. It presents a striking, moody backdrop for the artwork - at least it did on the dark winters day that I visited.

The Lakeside Gallery is further north, and seemingly guarded by an enormous horde of pigeons. It is a much brighter space, built around the millennium in the kind of cheery modernist style that you already know is going to house a funded by the lottery plaque.

Both galleries host an eclectic mixture of exhibitions, from displays by local schools and colleges to more major openings by modern artists. There’s no permanent collection so it is wise to check what is on before making the trip.

Photos by me, the Dilston Gallery has a distressed look…
…while the Lakeside Gallery is in the typical "white cube" style.
